The issue of web privacy came up in this week’s Ask Jack. Privacy and other problematical aspects have been discussed in a report by the Whois Task Force, published in February (). This says:

“Registrar’s access agreement shall require the third party to agree not to use the data to allow, enable, or otherwise support any marketing activities, regardless of the medium used. Such media include but are not limited to e-mail, telephone, facsimile, postal mail, SMS, and wireless alerts.”

In sum, people can trawl the Whois database for email and other addresses but are forbidden from using them for spamming. That is ridiculous. Does anyone seriously think that spammers are going to put of by the above paragraph? In addition if you register as an individual you have to give your complete details. Address, phone, etc. bloody ell!
