Kenyan champions

Paul Tergat winner of the New York Marathon

Congratulations to Paul Tergat, winner of the New York Marathon at his first attempt.

Tergat is a champion of champions and the current marathon world record holder. Tergat lead a team of four Kenyans in the top 10 of what many see as the most talented men’s pool in the New York Marathon ever. Congratulations to 4. Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot, 8. Simon Wangai, and 10. Isaac Macharia.

The women’s race was full of pride for Kenya as well. After establishing a lead of nearly 20m or so, Susan Chepkemei suddenly started vomiting. And I mean serious vomiting. Not once, not twice, but three times by my count. Now everyone knows that after you vomit you usually feel weak and at it looked like Chepkemei would collapse or at the very least stop running. But she never did, fighting through to the bitter end and eventually finishing second. Congratulations also to Salina Kosgei who came fourth.

Now that’s what I call a good day at the office for our untouchable Kenyan athletes.

“Not only is he a great athlete but a wonderful humanitarian who is deeply dedicated to helping the world’s poor and hungry.”
James Morris, The United Nations World Food Programme Executive Director on Paul Tergat.

Paul Tergat will next week receive the Global Oneness Award in Washington DC. The award is given to people who have done extremely well in sports and promotion of peace around the globe. Past winners of the award include former South African President Nelson Mandela and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. The world marathon record holder will be feted for his efforts as a World Food Program (WFP) ambassador against hunger. Tergat was named a WFP Ambassador Against Hunger in January 2004. In addition to efforts to support WFP programs, he recently launched his own foundation to help develop underprivileged children into future athletes.

ok… they didn’t show the vomiting on tv… but man, paul won by a second… a second! and Ramaala, he was pushing so hard and collasped at the finish line… that must suck… especially showing it in slow motion, over and over and over… and over… go kenya!

Yaani, amidst all the madness and shameful shenanigans that pervade this land of ours, we are blessed with people and moments like these!!! Paul Tergat is a brilliant example of a man!! And a Kenyan!!

And now to London we come!!!

Ps/ Your ass is mine!!! I think you know why!!!

After watching Tergat lose gold at athens by a second it was brilliant watching him snatch this one. credit to Ramaala for his determination all the way and for his graciousness in defeat (if you can call second place by a second defeat)

MsK .. mama watoto si you know we’re tight like that. i have 5 kilos of nyama choma and some millet flour just for you ;-)

that’s some pretty good company tergat is going to be in when he gets that award.

good for him!!

A champion of champions. Y’know whats more remarkable ? Throughout his career he never sold out on Kenya. At the rate athletes are defecting to other countries, akina Kipketer and the rest-some to Qatar (who in their right mind defects to Qatar??), Tergat is in a class of his own.
