12 years on

12 years on while we remember the anniversary we hear the same cries of “Never Again” rise up from the same mouths of the same people who trumpeted the same rallying cry last year, and the one before that. Meanwhile in Darfur never is happening today, again and again, mocking their shallow words before they even leave their mouths. Last month I wrote about the Rwandese soldiers who put “never again” into action. It would be a shame if we say, through our actions, that unless you have lived through genocide you will fail to understand the urgency.

As Africans and neighbours we need to think about Rwanda’s legacy. Rwanda’s positive legacy. Help it break free of the “genocide” tag which I believe is a necessary step for healing.

Amen.

On Friday I heard a very saddening story about a Rwandan genocide survivor who said the country cannot move on because thousands of Hutus who took part had been pardoned. It seems, despite noble intentoins, the hurdles in front of Rwanda are great.

Obviously the world, and Africa particularly, must continue to stand by Rwanda as the country struggles to heal.
