It is good to know that I am not alone!
@Sokari - Interesting point about people choosing to live in poverty, I had not seen it that way.

@Uaridi i have another Live8 ish post coming up ;-)

@GND I remember watching a some AID agencies being asked what the long term plans for withdrawl are and getting blank looks. people were planning on staying more or less forever, which means will we have to remain a "emergency area" forever! Interesting post!

A lot of those do-gooders want to do things on their own terms instead of enforcing laws that would actually help us. For example, laws to do with international trade. It's been said that if you give a man a fish, you'll satisfy his hunger for a day, but teach him how to fish and give him a vocation for life. Aid is like feeding us spoonfuls. If these organizations really want to help, they should enable people to be independent from them: teaching skills and giving us an equal chance to compete on the world stage. The Live 8 concerts may bring some visibility to our continent but I think they're mostly a PR stunt. I have a post about helping people http://randomgirlnextdoor.blogspot.com/2006_02_01_randomgirlnextdoor_archive.html

Allow Africans to share the platform with them? Excuse me and how will they tell the world that even in the 21st cent. we are still unable to do anything for ourselves? Also they dare not allow the world to listen to the orignators of all the beats and rhythms they have appropriated for themselves.

Did you actually watch Live?

I hear you on this one - First time I watched it I fell asleep on the sofa - the next time because I had picked it up cheap in the US and on one of those boring evenings we have from time to time though oh yes will watch that. I found it nauseating simple minded with empty one dimensional predictable characters. Fiennes as always played the his usual unbearably miserable pained individual self similar to his desert film which I cant recall at this moment. The worst was the female character with her self-righteous liberal like you say I will have my baby in the “African” hospital. Every one of those women in that hospital if given the choice would go to a better equipped hospital so what are you trying to prove by going there and then going home in your range rover or whatever. Its nonsense. The worst thing about these kind of films is that Mr & Mrs Joe Masses buy it.

I think white people are the only people on this earth who CHOOSE to live in poverty – like where I live in Granada you never ever see immigrants from anywhere (Africa/Central and South America) begging on the street – yet there are all these northern Europeans begging and living out of dustbins, walking around in bear feet, filthy and dirty and living in caves. Only the privileged in this world would choose to live in this way. The real poor are out there trying to earn a living as labourers, street cleaners, maids, cooks, cleaners, agricultural workers and street sellers so they can send money home to their families.
